Oru truck campers

Which ORU truck camper is right for you?

A guide to the Tenfold, Triton, Bruin and Bruin XL.

One of the questions we hear most is, “Which camper should I get?” It’s a good question, and the answer depends on how you plan to use your truck.

Maybe you want something light for weekend fishing trips. Maybe you’re newly retired and finally have time for those longer road trips you’ve been planning. Or maybe you want a comfortable way to explore the country without buying a big RV or towing a trailer.

Whatever your plans, we believe camping should be simple. You shouldn’t spend half an hour setting up after a long day of driving, and you shouldn’t have to give up the everyday usefulness of your truck just to have a comfortable place to sleep.

That’s why we build four lightweight truck campers here in Southern California: the Tenfold, Triton, Bruin and Bruin XL. They share the same philosophy, but each has its own strengths. Let’s go through them.

A quick comparison

Camper Starting weight (around) Starting price Best for
Tenfold 275 lbs $6,999 Light weight, simplicity and affordability
Triton 300 lbs $7,999 Standing room, big windows and an open-air feel
Bruin 325 lbs $9,999 Hard-wall comfort and incredibly easy setup
Bruin XL 450 lbs $12,499 Families, extra sleeping space and longer trips

Starting weights and prices are for base midsize-truck configurations as of October 2026. Actual specifications and pricing vary by truck.

1. Tenfold: travel light, camp big

Oru truck campers

The Tenfold is our lightest and most affordable camper. It’s a traditional wedge-style pop-up, which means the roof lifts higher at one end and slopes down toward the other. At just around 275 pounds, it’s a great choice if you want a comfortable place to sleep without adding much weight to your truck.

You get a true queen-size sleeping platform, room to stand inside, and the convenience of leaving your bedding on the platform when the camper is closed. People really appreciate that. After a long drive, your bed is already there waiting. No making the bed, no moving panels to get in and out. Just hop in and get the best night’s sleep you’ve had on the road.

Oru truck campers

It’s particularly well suited to solo travelers, couples taking shorter trips, and anyone who wants a simple camper they can leave on the truck for everyday driving.

One thing to think about: the wedge

Wedge campers are popular for good reason: they’re light, simple and low-profile when closed. The tradeoff is that the roof slopes down, so you have less overhead room at the lower end of the bed. Some taller people find that area a little cramped, especially when sitting up. For plenty of people it’s not an issue at all. But if you’d like more headroom, look at the Triton. For about $1,000 more, you get a full pop-up with consistent headroom throughout. That’s a small difference if you plan to spend a lot of nights in your camper.

Who should choose the Tenfold?

Choose it if keeping weight and cost down is your priority, you enjoy shorter adventures, and you’re comfortable with a wedge-style bed. It’s a great way into truck camping without spending a fortune.

2. Triton: big views, bigger adventures

Oru truck campers

The Triton is for people who love the feeling of sleeping outdoors but still want a comfortable bed and protection from the elements. Unlike the Tenfold, it’s a full pop-up: the entire roof rises, so you get the full vertical space throughout the camper.

With nearly seven feet of standing height, a queen-size platform and six large panoramic windows, the Triton feels remarkably open inside. Those windows are what make it special. Picture waking up in an evergreen forest in the Pacific Northwest, opening the windows and looking out at old-growth trees. It feels like the idyllic childhood treehouse, back when every day was made for adventure. It’s about as close to sleeping under the stars as you can get with a comfortable queen bed, an elevated platform, and windows you can zip up if weather rolls in.

Oru truck campers

At around 300 pounds, you get all that extra space for very little more weight than the Tenfold.

Why the Triton is worth considering

Compared with the Tenfold, the big difference is usable room. For about $1,000 more, you get a full pop-up, more headroom and those six windows. That’s especially appealing to taller campers, and to couples who want space to move around, change clothes and enjoy their mornings without feeling confined.

One thing to think about: fabric walls

The Triton uses durable marine-grade fabric for its pop-up walls. That keeps it light and gives it that open, airy feel, but fabric doesn’t have the same cabin feel as the hard walls on our Bruin models.

Not to get into the weeds too much… well, this is a blog, so into the weeds we go. When you pop the Triton up, you’ll need to go inside and make sure the alignment brackets are locked out. When you close it, you’ll need to make sure the pins are pulled and ready for it to come down. If opening and closing from the tailgate is a must, or you want a more insulated cabin feel and hard-wall protection, keep reading. The Bruin might be for you.

Who should choose the Triton?

Couples who enjoy scenic destinations and want a full pop-up with plenty of standing room, big windows and fresh air. It’s especially appealing if you love tent camping and sleeping under the stars but you’re ready for something more comfortable, elevated and quicker to set up.

3. Bruin: hard walls, easy camping

Oru truck campers

The Bruin is our flagship and historically our most popular model, and there’s a good reason. It combines the comfort and protection of hard walls with the light weight and convenience of a pop-up. At around 325 pounds, it uses our hybrid hard-wall system, which blends rigid wall panels with marine-grade fabric. Inside, you get the solid feel of hard walls without a big, heavy traditional truck camper. If you camp year-round or travel through different climates, that makes a big difference.

What really sets the Bruin apart: how easy it is to use

We put a tremendous amount of thought into this. You can open and close the Bruin right from the tailgate, and it takes just seconds. No setup routine, no walking around the truck putting things together. Open it and enjoy your campsite. That might not sound like a big deal until you’ve been traveling for a few weeks, or you have a sore shoulder, or you just want to focus on camping.

Oru truck campers

Imagine driving through the California desert on your way to Flagstaff (not the most beautiful stretch) and deciding to stop for the night. You pull into a campsite or BLM land, open the Bruin, and you’re done. The next morning you close it up and keep going. No wasted pit stop on the way to adventure, so you get to enjoy your day in beautiful Flagstaff. That simplicity is a big reason we recommend the Bruin to people who’ll use their camper often. If you’re retired and spending several weeks exploring national parks or visiting family, not wrestling with your equipment every day is a real advantage.

A comfortable place to spend the night

The Bruin has a true queen-size platform and a full pop-up design with more consistent headroom than a wedge. There’s room to get changed, relax and organize your things without feeling like you’re crawling around a small tent. And because it mounts to your pickup, you keep the convenience of driving a normal truck instead of maneuvering a big RV or towing a trailer. We’ve found that works particularly well for couples who travel regularly.

One thing to think about: price

The Bruin costs more than the Tenfold or Triton, so it isn’t the right choice if finding the lowest-cost camper is your main goal. But if you value the solid feel of hard walls and want something exceptionally easy to open and close, we think it’s worth the difference.

Who should choose the Bruin?

Couples and solo travelers who want hard-wall comfort without giving up light weight or convenience. It’s especially good for frequent camping, extended road trips, changing weather, and anyone who doesn’t want to spend much time setting up camp. For most people looking for a lightweight hard-wall truck camper, the Bruin is our first recommendation.

4. Bruin XL: go bigger, stay longer

Oru truck campers

The Bruin XL is exactly what it sounds like: a larger version of the Bruin. It has the same hard-wall construction and the same simple open-and-close system, with significantly more interior room. At around 450 pounds, it’s still remarkably light for the space it gives you.

More room without more work

You don’t sacrifice the ease that makes the standard Bruin so convenient. The XL opens and closes right from the tailgate too, so you get a much larger living area without turning setup into a chore. With a queen bed sleeping east to west, you can keep the entire bed of a 5-foot Tacoma open for activities, storage and more, without moving a thing. For people who travel often or spend weeks on the road, that matters.

More room to sleep, including the lower level

The XL has a substantially larger sleeping area than the standard Bruin, with enough width for an east-west king-size bed. The real advantage for families is the space below. On most trucks with beds five feet or longer, the XL can fit additional sleeping platforms on the lower level, creating another twin- or queen-size sleeping area. The exact setup depends on your truck bed.

Oru truck campers

That means a couple can sleep in the upper bed while kids or other family members sleep below. We think that makes the XL a fantastic choice for bringing the kids or grandkids camping. Even if you usually travel as a couple, the extra room to move around, change and organize your things makes a longer trip much more enjoyable.

One thing to think about: width on tight trails

That extra space comes with a tradeoff. At about seven feet wide, the XL is nearly two feet wider than our other campers. That makes a huge difference inside, but you’re also traveling with a wider load. It’s not ideal if you spend a lot of time on narrow trails, between closely spaced trees or on overgrown roads. If getting through the tightest trails is a big part of your adventures, the narrower standard Bruin may fit better. If most of your travel is highways, maintained forest roads, desert camping, national parks and established campsites, the XL’s extra room can be well worth it.

Who should choose the Bruin XL?

Families, couples planning extended road trips, and anyone who values more living and sleeping space. It’s also a great option if you normally travel as a couple but occasionally bring the kids or grandkids along. If you want a spacious camper that’s still easy to operate, the XL is hard to beat.

Hard walls or fabric walls?

This is probably the biggest decision you’ll make. The Tenfold and Triton use fabric pop-up walls: lightweight, comfortable, and great for people who like feeling connected to the outdoors. The Bruin and Bruin XL add rigid hard-wall panels for a more solid enclosure and more protection from the elements. Neither is right for everyone.

If most of your camping is in warmer months and you love opening the windows for a view, take a close look at the Triton. If you’re planning longer trips, regularly travel through changing weather, or simply prefer hard walls around you while you sleep, we’d lean toward the Bruin or Bruin XL. And if keeping your camper as light and affordable as possible is the goal, the Tenfold is a great starting point.

A few things to think about before choosing

How often will you move campsites?

If you’ll stay in one spot for several days, setup time may not seem important. But on a road trip where you’re stopping somewhere new almost every night, a camper that’s easy to open and close becomes much more valuable. That’s one of the Bruin’s biggest strengths.

How much room do you really need?

For one or two people, the Bruin, Triton or Tenfold may give you all the sleeping space you need. If you often travel with more people, or you just like room to stretch out, consider the Bruin XL.

How will you get in and out of bed?

All four campers have elevated sleeping platforms. In the Bruin, Bruin XL and Triton, most customers sleep with their feet toward the tailgate, so getting up is simple: work your way to the tailgate and hop down. In the Tenfold, most customers sleep with their head toward the tailgate. That makes sense, because you don’t want to wake from a bad dream about being late for work, sit up, and bump your head on the ceiling before remembering you’re on the adventure of your life. The catch is that with your head toward the tailgate, it’s trickier to flip around in the morning without waking up the whole tent.

Frequently asked questions

Which ORU camper is best for a retired couple planning long road trips?

For most couples who want hard-wall comfort and quick, easy setup, we recommend the Bruin. It’s a great balance of sleeping comfort, light weight and everyday practicality. Couples who want extra living space may prefer the Bruin XL.

Which ORU camper is best for taller people?

The Triton, Bruin and Bruin XL are worth considering because their full pop-up designs give more consistent headroom than the wedge-style Tenfold. The Tenfold still has a queen-size platform, but taller sleepers may find the lower end of the wedge cramped. All of our campers generally have more than 6'7" of standing room when popped up, depending on whether your truck has tall or short bed rails.

Which ORU camper is easiest to set up?

All four are designed for easy operation. The Bruin and Bruin XL are especially appealing because the hard-wall system opens and closes quickly from the tailgate. And at the end of the day, nothing is easier than the Tenfold: you’re two latches and a light push away from a set-up camper.

What’s the difference between the Tenfold and Triton?

The Tenfold is a wedge-style pop-up starting at $6,999 and around 275 pounds. The Triton is a full pop-up starting at $7,999 and around 300 pounds, with more consistent headroom and six panoramic windows. If extra standing room matters, we recommend the Triton.

What’s the difference between the Bruin and Bruin XL?

Both use hybrid hard-wall construction and open and close easily from the tailgate. The XL is substantially wider, with more interior space and more sleeping options. The standard Bruin is narrower, lighter and generally better for tight trails.

Which ORU camper is best for camping with children or grandchildren?

The Bruin XL. On most compatible trucks with beds five feet or longer, the lower level can fit an additional twin- or queen-size sleeping platform, so more people can sleep in the same camper.

Which ORU camper is the most affordable?

The Tenfold, starting at $6,999. The Triton starts at $7,999, the Bruin at $9,999 and the Bruin XL at $12,499.

Are ORU truck campers made in America?

Yes. We build them in Vista, California, just north of San Diego.

Our final recommendation

Tenfold: choose it if you want to keep things lightweight, simple and affordable.

Bruin XL: choose it if you want everything the Bruin offers but need more room for family, extra sleeping space or longer adventures.

At the end of the day, we build our campers around a simple idea: getting outdoors should be easy. Whether you’re spending a weekend fishing in the mountains, taking a months-long road trip across the country, or finally exploring those places you’ve been dreaming about, we want your camper to make the experience better, not more complicated. Less time setting up. More time enjoying the trip. That’s what ORU Designs is all about.
